IELTS is a test that requires very good English.

🧭 1. Understand the Structure

The writing test has two tasks:

  • Task 1 (Academic): describe data, charts, processes, or maps.

  • Task 1 (General Training): write a letter (formal / semi-formal / informal).

  • Task 2: essay — discuss an argument, problem, or opinion.

👉 Task 2 is worth twice as many points as Task 1.
So time management is critical — about 20 minutes for Task 1, 40 minutes for Task 2.


🕑 2. Plan Before You Write

Spend 3–5 minutes planning:

  • Read the question carefully.

  • Underline keywords (topic, instruction, point of view).

  • Decide your main ideas and examples.

  • Organize into 4 paragraphs (Intro, 2 Body, Conclusion).

💡 A clear plan = fewer mistakes later.


✍️ 3. Follow the Question’s Instruction

Many students lose marks because they:

  • Don’t answer all parts (Task Achievement ↓).

  • Misunderstand the question type (e.g., “advantages/disadvantages” vs. “agree/disagree”).

➡️ Always check what the task asks you to do (e.g., “Give your opinion,” “Discuss both views,” etc.)


🧩 4. Use Clear Structure

Essay format (Task 2):

  1. Introduction (paraphrase + thesis)

  2. Body 1 (main idea + example)

  3. Body 2 (another idea + example)

  4. Conclusion (summarize opinion)

Task 1 format (Academic):

  1. Overview (overall trend)

  2. Details 1

  3. Details 2


💬 5. Use Academic Language

  • Avoid informal words: ❌ “a lot of” → ✅ “a large number of”

  • Link ideas smoothly:
    “In addition,” “However,” “As a result,” “Overall,” etc.

💡 The examiner looks for Cohesion & Coherence (25%).


⚖️ 6. Check Grammar & Vocabulary

In the last 3–5 minutes:

  • Check subject–verb agreement.

  • Check spelling and punctuation.

  • Use variety: simple + complex sentences.

Each task is graded on 4 equal parts:

  1. Task Achievement / Task Response

  2. Coherence & Cohesion

  3. Lexical Resource (Vocabulary)

  4. Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Aim for balance across all 4.

  • Intro: paraphrase + clear thesis.
    導言:換句話說題目 + 立場清楚。

  • Body 1/2: 1 idea → explain → example.
    主體一/二:一點→解釋→例子。

  • Conclusion: restate stance + key reason.
    結論:重申立場 + 關鍵理由。

  • I agree that … because …; however, …

  • Although both views have merits, I contend that …

  • This essay examines the causes and proposes feasible solutions.

  • Agree/Disagree|同意/不同意

  • Discuss both views + your opinion|討論兩方並表態

  • Advantages/Disadvantages|優缺點

  • Problem–Cause–Solution|問題–原因–解決

  • To what extent do you agree?|你在多大程度同意?


4) Task 1 (Academic) quick method|Task 1(學術類圖表)速寫法

  • Intro: paraphrase the task.
    導言:改寫題目。

  • Overview (no numbers): main trend/highest/lowest/major change.
    總覽(不放數字):總趨勢/最高最低/重大變化。

  • Details 1/2: select & compare key data (2–3 comparisons).
    細節段:選 2–3 組關鍵數據做比較。

Overview starters|總覽開頭

  • Overall, X increased while Y declined, with Z showing the most dramatic change.
    整體而言,X 上升而 Y 下降,Z 的變化最明顯。

  • Overall, the process has N stages, beginning with … and culminating in …(流程圖)
    整體來看,此流程有 N 個步驟,自……開始,最終……。

Don’ts|避免

  • Don’t list every number; don’t explain why (no opinions).
    別把所有數字都列出;不評論原因(避免主觀)。


5) Task 1 (General Training letter)|GT 書信

  • Tone: formal / semi-formal / informal → match the prompt.
    語氣:正式/半正式/非正式,依題目設定。

  • Structure: greeting → purpose → details (3 bullets) → request/closing.
    結構:稱呼 → 目的 → 三點細節 → 請求/結尾。

Openers|開場

  • I am writing to inquire about…(formal)

  • I’m reaching out because…(semi-formal)

  • Just a quick note to…(informal)

Closers|結尾

  • I would appreciate your prompt response.(formal)

  • Thanks in advance for your help.(semi/inf)


6) Linking words (by function)|連接詞(功能分類)

  • Adding 補充: moreover; in addition; furthermore

  • Contrasting 對比: however; nevertheless; whereas; while

  • Cause–Effect 因果: therefore; thus; as a result

  • Example 例證: for instance; such as; to illustrate

  • Emphasis 強調: notably; in particular; indeed


7) Vocabulary upgrades|字彙升級

  • a lot of → a large number of / numerous

  • very important → crucial / pivotal

  • big increase → a substantial rise

  • go up/down → increase/decrease; surge/plunge

  • show → illustrate / demonstrate

  • get → obtain / receive


8) Grammar focus|文法檢查點

  • Subject–verb agreement|主動詞一致

  • Articles (a/an/the)|冠詞

  • Countable/uncountable nouns|可不可數

  • Punctuation & capitalization|標點與大小寫

  • Mix simple + complex sentences|簡複句並用


9) Band descriptors—what Band 7 looks like|評分重點(Band 7 特徵)

  • Task Response: addresses all parts, clear position, well-developed ideas.
    任務回應:完整回答、立場清楚、論點充分。

  • Coherence & Cohesion: logical flow, effective paragraphing, appropriate linking.
    連貫:邏輯清晰、段落分明、連接詞恰當。

  • Lexical Resource: varied vocabulary, some less-common items, accurate usage.

  • Grammar: a range of structures with generally high accuracy.

10) 60-minute game plan|60 分鐘時間配置

  • Task 2: Plan 5–6 → Write 30 → Check 4
