The bar chart compares the percentages of people in one country who accessed news through four different types of media in 2013, 2015 and 2017.
Overall, television was the most popular source of news at the beginning of the period, while Internet use increased dramatically and caught up with television by 2017. In contrast, the proportion of people reading printed newspapers fell steadily, whereas the figure for radio remained almost unchanged.
In 2013, nearly 80% of the population obtained news from television, compared with 40% for printed newspapers. The television figure then fell to approximately 67% in 2015 before recovering slightly to 70% in 2017. Newspaper readership moved in the opposite direction, declining from 40% in 2013 to 30% in 2015 and just 20% in 2017.
Just over 30% of people accessed news online in 2013, a figure similar to that for radio. Internet use then rose to around 40% in 2015 and surged to about 70% in 2017. By comparison, radio use stayed broadly stable at approximately 30% throughout the period.
